The publication 'The Kaiser's Colonial Worldview' was compiled on the occasion of the symposium 'The Last German Emperor's Colonial Art'.

The symposium 'The Last German Emperor's Colonial Art' took place on Saturday 23 March 2024 in the Academiegebouw in Utrecht.

The publication addresses the findings of the provenance research into potentially colonial collection items, as well as the colonial views of Wilhelm II. Thought-provoking stories that raise questions about, among other things, new ways for museums to fulfil their mission.

Colonial stories behind the collection items

The publication provides an extensive description of the findings of the provenance research into colonial collection items and addresses the colonial views of Wilhelm II. Among the objects is a series of precious Chinese lacquer panels, originating from the Forbidden City in Beijing. The question is how they came into the possession of Emperor Wilhelm. The identity of a previously unknown African colonial soldier portrayed in one of the works could also be established. A pith helmet turned out, upon investigation, to be a polo helmet belonging to German Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The helmet was made by the same company that produced the hats for Peaky Blinders and Indiana Jones.
