The great war and small village of Doorn

The great War and the small village of Doorn

An introduction to the First World War told from the perspective of the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II.

In the Netherlands, the Second World War is far better known than the First World War. This is partly explained by the fact that the Netherlands remained neutral during the 'Great War'. Since 2018, Museum Huis Doorn has been a Canon museum for the theme 'First World War' and with this publication offers an introduction to this devastating and far-reaching war, which changed the course of history.

WWI from the perspective of Wilhelm II
What caused the First World War? Who were the key players? What strategies were devised and what happened on the battlefields? These are just some of the questions this book addresses. It is written from a different perspective than most books, because Huis Doorn is inextricably linked to Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and one of the central figures of the First World War, who spent his final years in exile here after being forced from the throne.

The Western Front
This publication focuses on the Western Front and the movements of the German Emperor between Germany and the headquarters situated at the front. The texts are interspersed with Wilhelm II's own commentary on the events of the war. The story continues into the period Wilhelm spent in Amerongen and Doorn. Separate themes draw attention to objects in the museum's collection that refer to the war.

'The Great War and the small village of Doorn' was published in 2014 to mark the centenary of the First World War.
