Richly decorated and steeped in a fairytale atmosphere: this is how Christmas was celebrated 100 years ago in royal circles! Want to experience the true Christmas spirit this year? Immerse yourself in the authentic, nostalgic holiday ambiance and marvel at the beautifully adorned imperial interiors.
Festive Interiors
At Christmas, the emperor spared no expense. The finest china was brought out, and delightful dishes were served. How was the table set for the Christmas dinner, lunch, and afternoon tea? In the reception hall, you can see how the imperial family celebrated Christmas when they still lived in Germany, complete with eight decorated Christmas trees—one for each family member.
An Imperial Winter Wonderland
Experience Christmas like the imperial family. In the splendidly decorated setting of Huis Doorn, visitors can immerse themselves in a nostalgic, aristocratic Christmas atmosphere: between December 2 and January 11, the historic rooms are transformed into a fairy-tale backdrop.
Just like the festive traditions at castles and palaces in Germany, Huis Doorn exudes the same enchantment – historic walls, candlelight, and elegantly set tables reminiscent of the “family castle” of Hohenzollern Castle. Here, Christmas is not consumed but celebrated – with craftsmanship, lights, and tradition.
Special Exhibition: The Empress’s Ball Gown
This year’s special exhibition features a selection of extraordinary objects. Admire the ball gown of former Empress Auguste Viktoria and Emperor Wilhelm’s naval uniform with its accompanying officer’s sword from 1909. In addition to the imperial porcelain and gilded tableware displayed on the various tables, visitors can also view a magnificent buffet adorned with 18th century silverware.
Evening Openings
On Friday, December 19, and Tuesday, December 23, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, there will be special evening openings. Enjoy the Christmas atmosphere at Huis Doorn, live Christmas music, and a warm drink. Reservations are required (special admission fees apply, and museum cardholders pay a surcharge).
