Trenches full of death and destruction, devastated villages and towns, millions of displaced citizens. For four years, the First World War created millions of victims worldwide. Whilst the Netherlands remained neutral, the war had great consequences for the country: it struggled with large numbers of refugees, the army had to remain mobilised for a long period of time and there was a scarcity of goods.
